Vantage Debt Management (Pty) Ltd is a Cape Town debt counselling business that offers debt review under the National Credit Act. Its website shows NCR registration numbers NCRDC2955 and NCRDC2599, which the National Credit Regulator (NCR) register lists against individual counsellors trading as Vantage Debt Management. Debt review does not cancel debt, and you cannot withdraw once you have applied.

This page sets out what Vantage says about itself and what to ask before you sign. Vantage publishes no fee amounts on its website, so we give none for it. We are independent and earn nothing from Vantage.

The legal process is the same at every registered counsellor. What differs is the service, and how clearly the fees are explained.

What Vantage Debt Management does

Vantage describes itself as offering debt review, debt counselling and debt management advice. It also advertises a free credit report and financial health report, and says a clearance certificate is issued once your debts are settled.

It is not a lender, so it does not give loans. Vantage says the time it will take to repay your debt is flexible, which is why you should ask for your projected term in writing.

How debt review works with Vantage

Debt review follows the same legal steps at every counsellor.

  1. You apply on Form 16 with your documents, such as a salary slip and your outstanding balances. Form 16 warns that documents not submitted within 10 days of the application being received mean it will not be accepted.
  2. The counsellor checks whether you are over-indebted. If you are, the counsellor tells your credit providers and the credit bureaus within five business days and sends the credit providers a repayment proposal.
  3. The application, negotiation and referral to the Magistrate's Court or the National Consumer Tribunal must be completed within 60 business days of the date you applied. If all credit providers accept, the Tribunal can issue a consent order. If one or more decline, the matter goes to the Magistrate's Court.
  4. You pay the agreed monthly amount, usually through a payment distribution agent (PDA) registered with the NCR. The NCR says you may pay your credit providers directly instead.

During those 60 business days you are protected against legal action such as repossession and default judgment. Never give your counsellor money meant for your credit providers.

The NCR does not make a PDA compulsory. Vantage says repayments run through an NCR registered payment distribution agency. More detail: the debt review process step by step.

Vantage fees

Vantage does not publish its fees on its website, so ask for a written breakdown of every fee before you sign. It does advertise the assessment, the credit report, the financial health report and advice as free. The NCR fee guideline is the benchmark to check its quote against:

Fee (before VAT)NCR guidelineWhen it is due
ApplicationR50Upfront, before the assessment starts
AdministrationR300Upfront and in full
RestructuringThe lower of the distributable amount or R8,000 (R9,000 if married in community of property)Once-off, in month one, after the restructuring documents are submitted
After-care5% of the distributable amount, up to R450Monthly, after month two

The distributable amount is what is payable to your credit providers under the first repayment plan. Attorney fees are not fixed: they are agreed with the attorney and given to you in writing. Ask for a receipt when you pay the application and administration fees.

All applicable fees must be disclosed to you in writing before you sign. If the quote does not match this list, ask Vantage to explain the difference in writing.

Downsides and leaving debt review

  • Debt review does not cancel debt. The NCR says it is not a savings plan, and lower monthly payments can mean it takes you longer to pay off what you owe.
  • You cannot apply for new credit while you are under debt review.
  • Your credit record carries a debt review flag. The NCR says the flag is not a blacklisting, but credit providers must keep reporting your payment history, so keep paying as agreed.
  • There is no payment holiday. If you default, a credit provider can give notice to terminate the review on that agreement, but only at least 60 business days after you applied.
  • How long it takes depends on your debts and your budget. Ask Vantage for the projected term in writing.

You cannot withdraw once you have applied. Since Van Vuuren v Roets (2019) and the NCR withdrawal guidelines that took effect on 7 March 2022, no process lets you withdraw, and no court can rescind a debt review order.

The way out is a clearance certificate under section 71. You qualify when all the debts in the plan are paid, or when all your short-term debts are paid (vehicle finance, credit and store cards and loans count) and the only debt left is a home loan that is up to date under the order. The counsellor must issue the certificate within seven days after that. If it is refused, you can ask the Tribunal to review the decision.

The narrow exceptions are a magistrate finding you not over-indebted before an order is made, and a sequestration or liquidation order. You can also transfer to another debt counsellor at any stage without giving a reason. Never pay anyone who offers to remove you from debt review: under section 126A(3), NCR Circular 2 of 2025 says such firms may not be paid until the service has been performed. Read the clearance certificate guide.

Contact numbers, and if something goes wrong

Complain about a debt counsellor to the National Credit Regulator (NCR) at [email protected] or on 0860 627 627. Complaints about a credit provider, or about a credit bureau listing, go to the National Financial Ombud (NFO), which took over the Credit Ombud on 1 March 2024. The NFO is free: 0860 800 900. It does not list debt counsellors, so a complaint about how Vantage handled your case belongs with the NCR.

Vantage's website shows more than one set of numbers. The footer and contact page list 087 238 2749 and a WhatsApp number, 078 918 2102, while its terms of use give a landline, 021 201 1175. Confirm which line to use before you share personal details.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vantage Debt Management legit?

Vantage Debt Management (Pty) Ltd shows NCR registration numbers NCRDC2955 and NCRDC2599 on its website, and the NCR register lists both against individual counsellors trading as Vantage Debt Management. Check the number of the counsellor who handles your case on the NCR debt counsellor register.

How does Vantage Debt Management work?

You apply on Form 16 and the counsellor assesses whether you are over-indebted. If you are, your credit providers get a repayment proposal. It is confirmed by a Tribunal consent order or a Magistrate's Court order, and you pay the agreed monthly amount until your debts are paid and you receive a clearance certificate.

Does Vantage give loans?

No. Vantage Debt Management is a debt counselling business, not a lender. Debt review restructures the debts you already have and does not give you new credit.

How much does Vantage charge?

Vantage does not publish its fees on its website, so ask for a written breakdown of every fee before you sign. The NCR fee guideline lists R50 for the application and R300 for administration, both upfront, before VAT.

How do I contact Vantage Debt Management?

Vantage lists 087 238 2749, WhatsApp 078 918 2102 and [email protected] on its official website. Confirm them there before you share personal details.

How long does Vantage debt review take?

How long it takes depends on your debts and budget. Vantage says the time it will take to repay your debt is flexible; ask for the projected term in writing. Vantage says a clearance certificate is issued once all debt has been paid; under the NCR rules a home loan can remain if it is up to date.

Can I cancel Vantage debt review?

No. Once you have applied you cannot withdraw, and no court can rescind a debt review order. The way out is a clearance certificate once your debts are paid. You can transfer to another debt counsellor at any stage without giving a reason.

Where do I complain about Vantage?

Complain about the debt counsellor to the NCR at [email protected] or on 0860 627 627. Complaints about a credit provider or a credit bureau listing go to the National Financial Ombud on 0860 800 900.
