Summit Financial Partners is a South African employer financial wellbeing provider, in business since 2004, whose services include statutory debt counselling and voluntary debt rescheduling. The name Summit Financial Wellness does not appear on its website or on the current NCR register. Its website is aimed at employers, and it publishes no consumer fees and no free assessment.

The NCR registers debt counsellors as individuals, and several individual counsellors on the register trade as Summit Financial Partners, for example NCRDC3334. Summit's own site describes its services as employee benefits. It does not describe a route for individuals to apply on their own.

This page covers what Summit does, what it does not publish, and how debt review works wherever you do it. We are independent and earn nothing from Summit.

What Summit Financial Partners does

Summit says it has helped employers with financial wellbeing solutions since 2004. Its site lists:

  • an employer financial wellbeing programme covering assessment, protection, relief and independence
  • statutory debt counselling and voluntary debt rescheduling agreements
  • loan and garnishee audits
  • Summit Save, an employee savings product
  • retrenchment support workshops and consultations
  • legal challenges to garnishee, overcharging and reckless lending

Statutory debt counselling is debt review under the National Credit Act. We could not find an explanation on Summit's site of how a voluntary rescheduling agreement works. Ask what legal protection it carries before you agree to one.

Who can use Summit

Summit's website is aimed at employers. It describes its services as employee benefits and describes no route for individuals to apply on their own. Its contact form offers these options: Sign me up, Tell me more, I'd like to meet, I'm an existing client, and Technical issues (Digital Tool).

If your employer offers Summit, ask your employer or use the contact form. If you cannot get access, you do not need Summit. Debt review is the same legal process at every registered counsellor, and you choose the counsellor. You apply voluntarily, and placing a consumer under debt review without their knowledge and consent is prohibited conduct.

Check any counsellor before you sign. You are entitled to the counsellor's name and surname, place of practice and NCR registration number. See NCR registered debt counsellors.

Fees: what Summit publishes and what debt review costs

Summit does not publish its debt counselling fees on its website. Ask for them in writing before you sign. The counsellor must disclose all fees to you in writing.

The NCR fee guideline sets these amounts for debt counsellors, before VAT:

FeeAmount
ApplicationR50, paid upfront
AdministrationR300, paid upfront
RestructuringThe lower of the distributable amount or R8,000 (R9,000 if married in community of property), due in month one
After-care5% of the distributable amount, capped at R450, monthly after month two

Ask for a receipt for what you pay upfront. Do not give a counsellor money to pay your creditors. Pay them directly or through a registered payment distribution agent. More in debt review cost.

Reading the marketing claims

Summit's site says its debt relief solutions reduce monthly debt instalments by up to 60%, and that it has put R801,368,998 back in employees' pockets to date. Those are Summit's own marketing figures. We have not verified them.

The NCR warns against debt counselling adverts that promise percentage savings, written-off debt or government approved relief. Debt review does not cancel debt. Reduced payments mean the repayment period may get longer, but you keep legal protection while you pay as agreed.

Ask any counsellor for your own numbers in writing: your new monthly payment, how long the plan will run and what you will pay in total.
